Any Help Pleeeeease ??!

Postby Chunter » Thu Mar 04, 2010 3:24 pm

Hello

Am new to this site so please bear with me - I have recently purchased a Golf Plus Luna 56 reg and having filled the tank - (52 qorth of petrol) I reset the milometer to see how many miles I would get to a full tank and it was only 274 miles........!!!!!! Surely this should be somewhere neared the 400 mark at least??
Can anyone help me as to whether or not they think there may be a problem with it and what you woul drecommend - I dont want to be ripped off by a garage cos I dont know enough.

Your comments are appreciated (well only the non pee taking ones!)
Thanks

Why do you assume that a garage (all garages?) will rip you off because you don’t know about cars, that is an unfair generalisation, we are not all (or even most of us) con men, just chaps trying to make a living doing what is an extremely complex job.

At the rough UK average of 113p per litre that is 46 litres so roughly ten gallons so 27.4 mpg, lets round that up to 28mpg. If it is the 1.6 and this consumption is all town driving then you are not far off the government figure of 30.4mpg and this is for a gently driven brand new car.

Crasher - Apologies if I have upset you or any other workers out there - this was not my intention - I was just requesting any help or advise from people in the know as Im not one of them - what I meant was that I didnt want to put my car into a garage if there was nothing wrong with it but it just seems to be to be eating the petrol and it is only a 1.4. I only drive 20 mins a day to and 20 mins back from work agreed this is in rush hour traffic.

Again, I am a bit baffled by your reply knowing nothing about consumption- can you give me in laymans terms whether or not you think I might have a problem or if this car just uses the fuel quicker than my last (being a fiesta 1.25)

Help is appreciated.

I need you to do a test for me. Fill the car up right to the top and then drive it around until it has used a tank and then fill it up again. Note the number of miles and the number of litres you have put in and describe the type of driving you have been doing.

You have to remember with this car that it is a big heavy body for a 1.4 and if you want to make progress like in your Fiesta, you have to work it hard and that chews fuel. You would have been happier with the diesel; they do about 40% more to the gallon. The engine management system on your car is extremely sophisticated and if it was using too much fuel, a warning light would be illuminated on the dash.

i have a golf 1.4 and that is about right to a tank of petrol, maybe you should try a bmw 323i like i had before and getting 160 miles for the same £££ lol.
i get more miles if im driving on motorways and longer trips but most of my driving is local to and from work so the mpg is kinda crap cos car not warmed up fully, thats why i opted for the 1.4, local driving
