Damsel in distress! Mk4 Golf 2.0 GTI help please...

Postby L12 VK » Wed Jul 28, 2010 3:36 pm

Hello, I'm just after a little advice please as my car is slowly driving me mad

My name is Liz and I'm the proud owner of a Mk4 Golf 2.0 GTI which I've had for a couple of year now, she's a 1999 V reg.

I am having problems with her randomly cutting out :( It started back when the weather was bad, I was driving from Nottingham to Bristol and about an hour into the journey she lost all electrical power and the engine cut out and would not start, throwing up all the warning lights on the dash. I was towed back to Nottingham, and was then told that it was a head gasket failure. When plugged into the diagnostic machine it was a 'crank sensor' - which was then replaced. No other faults were shown on the diagnostic machine.

She was then fine for a few weeks, but between March and now she has done exactly the same thing several times- the garage has no idea what's wrong with it and I daren't drive too far incase she dies!!

Anyone got any pointers please? Does this sound like a common issue or can you think of anything to start looking at, I don't want to keep on throwing money as 'possible causes'.

Thanks

Liz

Also, thinking about it the wipers have an intermittent fault too - they just randomly stop working on all setting and will then just spring into life! Could this be related perhaps?

It sounds like a poor electrical connection or a faulty ignition switch. As we are in Nottingham, you could let me have a look at it.
