Engine Wont Rev Out

Postby leedoherty5337 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:24 pm

Hi, i have recently replaced the engine in my golf with a used one, same engine.

I have a mk4 (1991) 1.4 16v golf s, the engine code is AHW.

It was basically a straight swap, all fit in fine recoupled the gear box, lost abit of fluid so bled it up. The power steering pump lost alot of fluid which i have not replaced (didnt think it is necessary to make sure the engine works.

So basically the engine ticks over well but will not rev past 4000rpm, it then starts to cough and splutter, not a miss fire, there is a hollow sound in the exhaust as if the valve timing is out but its not. Revs perfectly up to 4000rpm.

Other info, when sat in the car can hear the sound of running water, may be due to power steering, i dont know.

All replies would be appreciated

Put in fluid, ran a diagnostic came up speed sensor fault.

put a new one in, no joy. Any other ideas

The water noise has now gone must have been power steering.

Did the speed sensor fault clear? What is the fault code number?

i didnt get it checked afterward but it did not solve the problem and basically changed everything; inlet manifold, all sensors, injectors and injector rail, crank speed sensor. i even counted the teeth on the crank sensor pickup, and made sure its got the same number and also none a broken or bent,

You need your own diagnostic system to help you now, think about buying a VAG-COM cable (about £20) and then registering it with Ross Tech in America for $99. It may sound a lot but I don't think you will get very far without it.

run it again, the code is 00513 engine speed sensor G28 no signal, thats what it says. do you know whether that is the crank speed sensor or the cam speed sensor. is it possible the ecu is not working correctly?

That is the crank sensor signal, it could be wiring or ECU, I have had ECU's do this.
